ThermoDrain Model Selection Guide
Selecting the right Drain Water Heat Recovery (DWHR) unit depends on your project’s physical space constraints, performance goals, and local municipal building code stringencies.
To maximize the financial return on your investment, evaluate our models by third-party verified efficiency performance rather than physical length alone. The higher the efficiency-to-length ratio, the lower your base utility load and the more performance credits your project earns in energy modeling software.
The Three Core Residential Classes
Whether you select the premium TDX Series (Direct-Glue ABS Hubs with 360° Swivel PEX Ports) or the standard TDH Series ( Fixed Ports in PEX crimp, PEX expansion or traditional Solid Copper Ends), our residential models are engineered to address three primary performance frameworks:
1. Ultra-Compact Performance (Highest Return on Investment)
- Best For: Tight framing basements, townhomes, multi-family developments, or retrofits with severe vertical height restrictions where installation space is at an absolute premium.
- TDX Series Model: TDX3240 (24.0″ Long | 33.59% Efficient | 5.3 kW Heat Recovery)
- TDH Series Model: TDH3320B (Value baseline | Certified 41% Efficient)
2. The Compliance Standard (Code-Required Efficiency Metrics)
- Best For: Production homebuilders needing to satisfy strict regional building codes (such as Ontario SB-12 or US IECC pathways) that specify a mandatory 42% thermal efficiency floor baseline for equal-flow layouts.
- TDX Series Model: TDX3350 (35.0″ Long | Certified 42.07% Efficient | 7.7 kW Heat Recovery)
- TDH Series Model: TDH3335B (33.5″ Long | Certified 42.1% Efficient | Value Code Crusher)
3. Net-Zero Pro (Maximum Yield High-Performance Homes)
- Best For: Passive House layouts, Net-Zero Energy custom designs, multi-shower luxury homes, and performance-path energy modeling tracks where peak heat reclamation is required.
- TDX Series Model: TDX3615 (61.5″ Long | Certified 55.04% Efficient | 10.1 kW Heat Recovery)
- TDH Series Model: TDH3620B (62.0″ Long | Certified 57.2% Efficient | 10.7 kW Max Thermal Yield)
Advanced Sizing & Code Compliance Workarounds
Plumbing system diameters across residential architectures can vary. ThermoDrain units are designed with engineering tolerances to resolve layout issues cleanly:
Looking for Metric Standard Pipe Sizes?
If your construction project is located in a market utilizing metric utility sizing, we offer the ThermoDrain in fully compatible 75mm and 110mm outer drain stack diameters paired with 22mm potable coil systems. All included transition drain couplings on metric variants are fully calibrated to match international pipe dimensions seamlessly.
Installing a 3″ ThermoDrain on a 2″ Drain Stack Stack?
Can you install a 3-inch model if your home features a smaller 2-inch vertical secondary branch drain line? Yes, under standard plumbing code exceptions. Because residential shower-only greywater lines do not handle heavy solids, many major jurisdictions permit upsizing the pipe section inline to accommodate a higher-efficiency heat exchanger. For example, Section 7.4.9.1 of the Ontario Building Code (OBC) explicitly allows an installer to adapt a larger diameter ThermoDrain unit inline on a smaller drain pipe, and safely return to the smaller downstream piping standard below the device.
(Always consult your local building inspector or consulting energy advisor to verify performance path sizing compliance before cutting your lines).
Need a Custom Commercial Integration Sizing?
If you are specifying multi-residential layouts or high-flow industrial facilities requiring our robust 4-inch commercial TD Series modules (such as the 46.0% efficient TD442B), contact our engineering desk directly for customized flow-rate diagnostics and CAD files.
